About the Chinese Silver Panda
The Chinese Silver Panda has been issued by the People's Bank of China since 1983. The obverse consistently features the Temple of Heaven — the iconic circular hall in Beijing — while the reverse features a new giant panda design each year. That annual design change is the defining characteristic of the series and one of the primary reasons it attracts collectors worldwide.
In 2016, China switched the coin's weight from one troy ounce to 30 grams as part of a metric system standardization. Modern coins (2016 onward) contain 30g of .999 fine silver. Pre-2016 coins contain one troy ounce. Both are widely recognized, but they are not the same weight — always confirm which you are buying or selling.
Mintage numbers vary by year and some issues are significantly scarcer than others. Well-preserved examples in original packaging tend to trade at stronger premiums, particularly for lower-mintage years.
Our Take
The Silver Panda sits in an interesting spot — it is bought both as a silver bullion coin and as a collectible. The annual design change makes it appealing to people who want to collect a complete year set, and that collector demand drives premiums above what you would pay for a generic silver round.
For pure silver accumulation, the Silver Eagle or Silver Maple Leaf are generally more straightforward — both contain a full troy ounce and trade closer to spot. The Panda is the right choice if the collector angle matters to you, if you want diversity in your stack, or if you specifically like the design.
When selling, condition and original packaging matter. Pandas in original mint packaging or capsules command better prices than loose coins with handling marks. If you have Silver Pandas to sell, bring them in and we can assess what you have.
