About the 1 oz Gold Bar
A 1 oz gold bar contains exactly one troy ounce of gold — typically .9999 fine on modern bars. Unlike government-issued coins, gold bars are produced by private refiners and carry no face value or legal tender status. They are priced purely on gold content and market conditions.
The 1 oz size is the standard individual gold bar for most buyers. It is large enough to offer a meaningful discount on premium versus fractional gold, while still being easy to store and sell as a single unit.
Common brands include PAMP Suisse, Valcambi, Credit Suisse, Engelhard, and the Perth Mint. PAMP Suisse bars — especially the Fortuna design sealed in a CertiCard assay — are among the most globally recognized and liquid gold bars available. Engelhard and Credit Suisse bars are also widely accepted by dealers.
Most 1 oz gold bars come either loose or in assay packaging. Original assay cards certify weight and purity and may add a small premium. Keep packaging if you have it.
Our Take
1 oz gold bars are a solid choice for buyers who want a straightforward unit of gold content with no government mint markup built into the design. The tradeoff is that bars — especially generic ones — don't carry the same instant recognition factor as American Gold Eagles or Maple Leafs. Most dealers know them, but branded bars from well-known refiners are easier to sell quickly.
Brand matters more on gold bars than on silver bars because the dollar amount per ounce is so much higher. A PAMP Suisse or Valcambi bar will sell faster and hold its premium better than a bar from an unknown mint. If you are buying to hold and eventually sell, spend the small extra premium for a recognized brand.
Condition matters too. A bar in its original assay card is easier to sell than a loose bar with surface scratches. Keep packaging if you have it.
