About the 1 oz American Gold Eagle Coin
The 1 oz American Gold Eagle is a U.S. Mint gold bullion coin first issued in 1986. It is 22-karat gold with a composition of 91.67% gold. The total coin weight is approximately 33.931 grams because the alloy includes copper and silver for hardness. The pure gold content is exactly one troy ounce.
The coin carries a legal tender face value of $50. It is not traded at face value. Price tracks the gold spot market plus a dealer premium.
The obverse features a full-length figure of Lady Liberty, based on the design from the 1907 Saint-Gaudens double eagle. The reverse shows a family of bald eagles. Three versions exist: bullion, proof, and uncirculated. Bullion Eagles are the standard investment coin. Proof and uncirculated versions are collector coins and are not interchangeable with bullion at a dealer counter.
Gold Eagles are also available in 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz sizes. Smaller sizes carry a higher premium per troy ounce of gold. This page covers the 1 oz version.
Our Take
Gold Eagles are one of the easiest coins to quote. Most U.S. buyers know what they are, and that recognition matters when you want to sell. Finding a buyer is not the hard part.
Fractional sizes make sense for buyers who want smaller units. The cost per troy ounce of gold goes up as the coin size goes down. That is not a reason to avoid them — it is a number to know before you buy.
