About the American Platinum Eagle
The 1 oz American Platinum Eagle has been produced by the U.S. Mint annually since 1997. It contains one troy ounce of .9995 fine platinum and carries a face value of $100, making it legal tender in the United States.
The obverse features a portrait of the Statue of Liberty by John Mercanti. The reverse design has evolved over the years — early issues depicted a soaring bald eagle, while later series introduced rotating themed designs celebrating aspects of American democracy and ideals.
The Platinum Eagle is the only U.S. Mint platinum bullion coin and one of the few government-issued platinum coins that meets IRS requirements for a self-directed precious metals IRA. It is the benchmark product in the U.S. platinum coin market and is recognized by dealers nationwide.
Our Take
Platinum is a different market than gold or silver. The price is driven by both investment demand and heavy industrial use — particularly in automotive catalytic converters — which makes it more sensitive to economic cycles than gold. When industrial demand softens, platinum can underperform; when supply tightens, it can spike quickly.
The Platinum Eagle is the right coin to own if you want platinum exposure in a government-backed, IRA-eligible format with strong dealer recognition in the U.S. It is not as globally liquid as gold coins, but most reputable dealers know and trade it.
Premiums on platinum coins tend to run wider than on gold or silver coins because the market is thinner. Factor that into your cost basis when buying.
