About the British Gold Britannia
The 1 oz British Gold Britannia has been issued by the Royal Mint annually since 1987. Modern examples (2013 and later) contain one troy ounce of .9999 fine gold and carry a face value of £100, making them legal tender in the United Kingdom.
The obverse features a portrait of the reigning British monarch — currently King Charles III. The reverse features Britannia, the classical female personification of Britain, depicted with a trident and shield. The Britannia design has appeared on British coinage for centuries and is one of the most enduring images in numismatic history.
Earlier Britannias (1987–2012) were struck in .9167 fine gold (22 karat), the same fineness as the American Gold Eagle. In 2013 the Royal Mint upgraded to .9999 fine gold, bringing the Britannia in line with the Canadian Maple Leaf and Austrian Philharmonic. Be aware of the fineness when buying or selling older examples.
Our Take
The Gold Britannia is a well-recognized coin globally, particularly in European and Asian markets. The Royal Mint's reputation and the coin's long history make it a trusted product for both buyers and dealers.
In the U.S. market, the Gold Britannia trades at a competitive level relative to the Gold Eagle and Gold Philharmonic. Most American dealers know the coin well. If you are looking for a pure (.9999) gold coin with strong global recognition, the Britannia is a solid choice alongside the Maple Leaf and Philharmonic.
One thing to watch: if someone offers you a pre-2013 Britannia, confirm the fineness. Those coins are .9167 fine, not .9999 — they contain the same troy ounce of gold but at a lower stated purity. Most dealers price them accordingly.
