About the 1 oz Silver Buffalo Round
The Silver Buffalo Round is a privately minted silver round, not a government-issued coin. It contains one troy ounce of .999 fine silver and is produced by several different private mints. Because multiple mints produce this round, the exact design and finish can vary slightly depending on the source.
The design is based on James Earle Fraser's Buffalo Nickel, first used as a five-cent piece from 1913 to 1938. The obverse shows a profile of a Native American chief. The reverse shows an American bison standing on a mound, with the silver content and purity stamped below.
Unlike the American Silver Eagle or Canadian Silver Maple Leaf, the Silver Buffalo Round carries no face value and is not legal tender. It is priced entirely on silver content and market conditions.
Our Take
Silver Buffalo Rounds trade at a lower premium than Silver Eagles or Maple Leafs. For buyers focused on silver content and cost per ounce, that spread is the main reason to consider them. You get the same amount of silver for less money out of pocket.
The tradeoff is liquidity. Silver Eagles and Maple Leafs have government backing and wider recognition. Buffalo Rounds are known, but they carry a smaller premium when you sell. If you are buying to hold silver content and plan to sell to a dealer, that difference usually stays manageable.
Condition matters. A round in poor shape will not command the same price as a clean one. If you are selling Buffalo Rounds, let us know what you have before coming in.
